Nuclear waste being transported by road. This is a Unifetch flask used for transporting irradiated nuclear fuel. Unifetch flasks have been used to move irradiated research reactor fuel, including fuel made of highly enriched uranium, to processing or storage facilities. Like other designs of transport flask, the Unifetch flask has steel sides several inches thick with cooling fins to ensure that its contents of highly radioactive fission products do not leak, overheat or rupture in the event of an accident. Unlike the transport of irradiated nuclear fuel from power stations, the movement of irradiated fuel from research reactors is an infrequent operation. Photographed in the UK.
