Oil port, Iran, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). This is Kharg Island, Iran's primary oil export terminal in the Persian Gulf. This 10-kilometre-long island is porous limestone rock that contains fresh water, which supports a population of gazelles. Various types of infrastructure are seen on the island, including a runway (centre left), a harbour (upper right), and oil tanks (round). Oil slicks (white), shown on the water's surface by reflected sunlight, reveal the flow of water currents. A ship's wake is at upper right. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 31 August 2002.
