Body imaging. Composite image of several techniques used for visualising the anatomy of the human body. The techniques seen here are computed tomography (CT), X-rays (radiography) and artworks. 3-D CT scans (such as the skull) use a computer to combine several X-ray slice images into a 3-D model. X-rays (such as the half of the pelvis at left) reveal body structures as different tissues transmit different amounts of X- rays. X-ray angiography (kidneys, above pelvis) uses a contrast medium injected into the blood to highlight blood vessels. Diagnostic techniques such as these can be used to identify disorders within the body.
