Fertilisation. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human egg during fertilisation in the fallopian tube or oviduct. The rounded egg (at left) is covered in yellow hair-like sperm. Each sperm has a head, neck, and a long tail. The human female usually produces a single large egg, and only one of the millions of male sperm released may penetrate the egg to fertilise it. The process occurs in the fallopian tubes which connect the ovaries to the womb. The surface epithelium of an oviduct is seen (pink) with cilia (blue tufts). Cilia beat rhythmically, aiding transport of the egg to the womb for implantation. Magnification: x72 at 5x7cm size. x250 at 8x10"~LANDSCAPE"
