The central body of the bone contains the sphenoidal sinus (air space). The upper part of the bone contains a depression in which the pituitary gland is situated. The wings support part of the temporal lobe of the brain and form part of the back and side walls of the eye sockets. Openings in the wings allow nerves to pass through.
