Foot bones. Side view of the bones in a normal human foot. The tibia (inner & larger) & fibula (lower leg bones) articulate with the talus (top foot bone) forming the ankle joint (centre right). The tarsals (centre) articulate with the elongated metatarsals (centre) these are the bones that allow movement in the foot. The metatarsals join the phalanges forming the 'knuckle' joints in the foot. The phalanges form the toes. There are 26 bones in each foot: 7 tarsals in the ankle & heel (calcaneus), 5 metatarsals in the middle of the foot & 14 phalanges.
