Engraving of the top of the brain with the skull & membranes removed to show its folded structure. The drawing was published in De Humani Corporis Fabrica (1543), by Andreas Vesalius. Vesalius, born 1514 & died in 1564, was a Flemish anatomist whose dissecting work, published in the above book, was the first accurate study of human anatomy. It is not clear who drew the plates. Titian is thought to have been involved and it is certain that Jan van Kalkar and Domenico Campagnola contributed.
