Deltoid muscle. Historical artwork of the musculature of the shoulder and the movement it creates by the Italian artist, engineer and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). The deltoid is a large muscle on the shoulder comprising front, middle and back sections. The front section (bottom) is used to lift the arm up and forwards (top). Da Vinci was one of the first people ever to produce drawings of anatomical subjects.
