Anaesthetic equipment. An Esmarch chloroform inhaler, dated 1879. This device was used to administer chloroform as an anaesthetic during 19th century surgery. It consists of a cotton- covered facemask through which chloroform was introduced. As an anaesthetic chloroform was introduced into medicine in 1847 by Sir J.Y. Simpson as a more convenient substance than the previously used ether.
