These organs are usually linked only by a single ligament (white, centre). Adhesions are growths of fibrous (scar) connective tissue, formed as a response to tissue trauma. Adhesions, usually painless, are a common result of abdominal surgery. They can also form in endometriosis, when detached bits of the uterus lining escape into the abdomen. The adhesions can prevent the ovary's eggs passing to the Fallopian tubes (centre right) and on to the uterus. Ovarian scarring (red) is from a recent ovulation cycle.
