Ectopic pregnancy. Illustration of a six week old human embryo, in an ectopic pregnancy. At upper left is the embryo which has implanted in a fallopian tube (pink). At centre right is an ovary (white). The embryo is seen within its amniotic sac; it has an umbilical cord (orange) and a developing placenta (red). In ectopic pregnancy, the embryo implants outside the uterus, most commonly in a fallopian tube (as here), or more rarely in the abdominal cavity or cervix. As the pregnancy develops the growing embryo may rupture the surrounding tissues causing serious bleeding. Surgery is performed to remove the embryo, and to repair or remove the fallopian tube.
