MODEL RELEASED. Meningitis test. 16-month-old baby boy being tested for meningitis. A common symptom of the condition is a blotchy skin rash. This will not fade under pressure like a normal rash, and so a clear glass can be pressed against the rash to test for this change. If the rash does not fade, the carer should seek immediate medical help. This non-fading rash is also a symptom of septicaemia (bacterial blood poisoning). Both meningitis and septicaemia are extremely serious conditions that can cause permanent damage and death. Meningitis is the viral or bacterial inflammation of brain membranes. Other symptoms include nausea, a stiff neck, and a dislike of bright lights.
