Practising surgery with Virtual Reality. An image of an eye and scalpel taken from a surgical simulator used to practice eye surgery. This is one of a stereo pair of images used in a Virtual Reality (VR) system which is viewed through a modified stereo operating microscope. This allows a procedure to be carried out using a 'virtual' scalpel on the computer-modelled eye. The scalpel is controlled by a digitiser pen, fitted with a feedback device to give 'feel' to its movement. The procedure may be recorded for later analysis, or used as a teaching aid. This simulator was developed at the Multimedia Technology Laboratory of the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA.
