This machine finds the blood group of a sample and tests it for the presence of antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV) and the bacterium that causes syphilis. During transfusions the donated blood must be compatible with the patient's blood group. Incompatible groups can cause fatal immune reactions. CMV is a common virus that does not cause symptoms in healthy individuals, however it can cause serious infection in premature babies and those with a weakened immune system. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection, which can also be transmitted via the blood.
