Endoscopic view of the interior of the human stomach, recorded during the course of a stomach biopsy. The basic endoscope consists of a fibre- optic cable fitted with a light source, and allows a doctor an illuminated view of otherwise inaccessible areas of the body. This particular device is fitted with a biopsy attachment (small black area at left), which permits the examiner to remove a small sample of tissue for subsequent histological (microscopic) examination. This technique may be performed, for example, in suspected cases of cancer of the stomach.
