The man is indicating whether he can hear each beep by pressing a button on a handheld device (lower right). An audiologist (not seen) is lowering the volume of sound for each frequency until it is no longer audible. This gives the patient's hearing threshold at each frequency, which can be plotted on an audiogram. Treatment depends on the extent, type and cause of the hearing loss.
