MODEL RELEASED. Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Tongue lesions of a patient with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), also called erythema multiforme major. SJS is a serious reaction of the immune system to drugs or viral infection. Lesions erupt on the skin and mucous membranes. These are treated as burns, with saline compresses for skin lesions and mouthwashes for oral lesions. Lost fluids must be replaced. The skin pain can be treated with local anaesthetics. SJS patients require hospital care, since severe cases of the gastrointestinal or respiratory membranes may be fatal. Photographed in Africa.
