Alcoholic liver damage. Light micrograph of a section through the damaged liver of a patient showing symptoms of alcohol abuse. Such alcoholic consumption causes fatty change, the accumulation of fat globules (white) in the liver cells. Bands of fibrous tissue are also seen in the liver (pink, lower right). These features reduce the efficiency of the liver, and may lead to jaundice, oedema and confusion. Abstaining from alcohol may allow the liver to heal itself, but continued drinking can lead to liver failure. This is fatal, and can only be treated with a liver transplant.
