Bladder cancer. Light micrograph showing cancerous cells (across centre, nuclei stained dark) that have infiltrated tissues of the urinary bladder. The cells show chaotic and disorganised growth typical of cancers. This is a carcinoma, a cancer arising from the bladder lining. Symptoms may include passing blood in the urine and a feeling of increased bladder pressure. Depending on the site and invasiveness of the cancer it may be removed surgically or destroyed with heat. If the cancer is widespread, radiotherapy or even removal of the bladder (cystectomy) may be necessary. The prognosis for patients with bladder tumours that are found early is good.
