MODEL RELEASED. Neck contracture. Boy with a neck contracture, the permanent shortening of muscles in the neck. The contracture has occurred due to the loss of a large area of skin, possibly because of a burn. The scar tissue has pulled the edges of the remaining skin together, restricting normal movement of the neck. Treatment involves surgery to remove the scar tissue, followed by a skin graft to cover the wound. Physical therapy would also be needed to help stretch out the muscles. Photographed in Africa, where lack of basic medical services, particularly in rural areas, allows many condition to progress before treatment can be provided.
