Osteoarthritis. X-ray of the foot of a 57-year-old woman with osteoarthritis. The metatarsals, the long bones which join to the toes, are in the upper frame. Normally, the metatarsals are separated from the bones in the lower frame by friction-reducing cartilage. Here, osteoarthritis has caused the cartilage to wear away, causing the joint spaces to become narrowed. This makes the joints stiff and painful. Osteoarthritis is common in people over the age of 60. More women than men suffer from severe osteoarthritis. Symptoms can be relieved with painkilling and anti-inflammatory drugs, and physiotherapy, although surgery may also be necessary.
