False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single virion (virus particle) of the herpes simplex virus, migrating from an infected host cell's nucleus (green) into the surrounding cytoplasm (blue, at top). The herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a common parasite of man, causing a variety of infections, including whitlows and cold sores of mouth & genitalia. Genital herpes (due to HSV type 2) is a sexually-transmitted diseases that is least amenable to treatment, and has been implicated in the development of cancer of the cervix in women.
