Transmission electron microscope. Researcher uses a transmission electron microscope (TEM) to view a specimen of brain with Alzheimer's disease. On the display at lower left, an amyloid plaque (dark), a characteristic symptom of Alzheimer's disease, can be seen amongst the tissue (green). A TEM produces an image by passing electrons rather than light through the subject. They can magnify up to around 5 million times.
