MODEL RELEASED. Physics experiment. Creation of a stationary transverse wave. A schoolboy (left) is holding one end of a flexible spring in his hand (bottom left), while the other end of the spring is connected to a chair leg (top right). These two points are held stationary as the spring is moved from side to side, creating a transverse wave with one whole wavelength between the two ends. At the middle of the spring is a third stationary point (or node) that does not move. The two peaks of the wave are called antinodes. A stationary wave is also called a standing wave.
