U.S. President John F. Kennedy presents the 1962 Fermi Award to Dr Edward Teller (second from left) at the White House. Also present are Glenn T. Seaborg (far left) and Mrs Teller. Born in Budapest on 15 January, 1908, Teller obtained his Ph.D in Germany in 1930. He left because of Hitler & arrived in America in 1935. Throughout World War II he worked on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, developing the first uranium fission bomb. Teller went on to advocate & develop the hydrogen fusion bomb: the 1st device was tested in 1952. Glenn T. Seaborg discovered the transuranic element plutonium in 1940.
