Sir Titus Salt (1803-1876), English textile manufacturer and social reformer. Salt took over the running of his father's textile mill in Bradford in 1833 and over the next 20 years became the town's largest employer. He became Mayor in 1848 and, appalled at the effect of pollution on living standards in Bradford, tried to bring in legislation to limit air pollution. When all action was opposed, Salt left Bradford to set up an industrial community, Saltaire, on the banks of the River Aire. Noise and air pollution was minimised and all homes had running water and gas. Saltaire also had its own school, hospital, park and library.
