Severo Ochoa (1905-1993), Spanish-US biochemist, at work in May 1956. Ochoa was educated in Spain, and did early research in Germany under Meyerhoff. He also worked in the UK. His research included the study of the biochemistry of muscle, as well as work on vitamin B1. From the 1940's onwards he worked in the USA, becoming a US citizen in 1956. He shared the 1959 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research into the biological production (synthesis) of the genetic molecules RNA (ribonucleic acid) and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).
