Portrait of Sir Christopher Ingold (1893-1970), English organic chemist. Ingold studied chemistry at Southampton and London before entering industry. Two years later, he returned to Imperial College London as a lecturer, and in 1924 became professor of chemistry at Leeds. There he was able to devote time to his electronic theories of organic chemistry. As is often the case, similar work was being conducted by another scientist (Robinson), and much controversy followed the publication of their separate results. Thereafter, Ingold turned his attention to reaction rates and reaction mecanisms.
