John P Holland (1840-1915), Irish-American inventor of the modern submarine, peering from the conning tower of his Holland VI craft. Holland was an Irish nationalist whose passion for submarines was born of a desire to be able to attack the powerful British fleet. He developed the Holland VI in 1900, and sold it to the US government. It was 16 metres long and had a top speed of 8 knots (around 15 kilometres per hour).
