Emma Darwin. Coloured historical portrait of Emma Darwin (1808-1896), wife of Charles Darwin and mother of their ten children. She sat for this portrait by George Richmond at the age of 32 following her marriage to Charles. She was also his cousin and the daughter of Josiah Wedgwood II. The marriage added to the ties between the two families, who were already closely related. Emma was a devout Christian and very discreet. Her views on her husband's work are not known, but Charles did worry that his work on evolution would cause her anxiety. She outlived her husband by fourteen years.
