Bertrand Guillaume Carcel (1750-1812), French inventor, with his oil lamp. In 1800, Carcel added a clockwork pump to the Argand oil lamp to give it a steadier light. The Argand oil lamp (1781) had improved on early oil lamps to produce a smokeless constant flame that was seven times brighter than a candle. This is an early 20th century French artwork.
