Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), British philosopher. This is his preserved body, which is displayed at University College London (UCL), London, England. Bentham was a British gentleman, linguist, social philosopher, political activist and legal scholar. He is best known as the founder of utilitarianism, or philosophical radicalism, a form of hedonism in which human happiness is the prime measure of any system of morals and ethics. Bentham founded UCL in 1826 to provide accessible education to those outside the Church of England. Bentham requested, in his will, that his embalmed body be dressed and placed on display in a glass cabinet at UCL. It is still there today, over 170 years later.
