Satyendra Bose. Historical portrait of the Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose (1894-1974). Bose was educated and worked in India. His work ranged over many aspects of physics, among them unified field theory, statistical mechanics, theories of X-ray crystallography and the ionosphere. He is best known for his work in quantum statistics. In 1924 he travelled to Europe, meeting some of the leading physicists of the day such as de Broglie, Born and Einstein. Einstein extended Bose's work to create a general statistics of quantum systems. This is known as Bose-Einstein statistics and deals with particles with an integral spin. These particles are now called bosons.
