Aime Argand. Engraving of Aime Argand (1755-1803), Swiss physicist. In 1784, Argand invented a vastly improved oil lamp. The lamp had a really bright flame. It used a wick of circular section fitted between two concrete metal tubes, so air was supplied to both sides of the wick. It was much used in lighthouses.
