Livingstone and Stanley. Engraving of Scottish explorer David Livingstone (1713-73) and Anglo- American journalist Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) collecting plants on the River Rusizi, Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Stanley (standing) had been sent to find Livingstone in 1869 by the New York Herald after the Scotsman had not been heard from for several years. Stanley found the ill Livingstone in Ujiji, Tanzania in 1871. He met him with the words Dr Livingstone, I presume" & nursed him back to health. The two men then explored the north end of Lake Tanganyika together. Stanley returned to Europe in 1872 but Livingstone stayed and died on an expedition."
