Camelthorn trees (Acacia erioloba). The common name of these deciduous trees comes from an Afrikaans word meaning acacia of the giraffe". Camelthorns grow in sandy soils in African grassland and open spaces, reaching heights of around 17 metres. Their foliage is popular with browsing herbivores, particularly giraffes, as are their large, pod-like fruit. Camelthorn roots penetrate to depths of many metres in order to find water. Photographed in the Auob river bed, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, southern Africa."
