Saccorhiza polyschides, a brown marine algae found on the Atlantic coast of North & West Europe. The algae is divided into three structurally distinct parts; a warty holdfast (left), showing attachment 'roots' which provides firm anchorage to the substrate, usually rock, a flattened stemlike (with wavy edges) part called the stipe & the leaflike structure called the lamina, where photosynthetic pigments are stored. Together with the chlorophyll pigments, the brown algae contain fucoxanthin, which is responsible for the brown colour. The upper part of the lamina or blade is split into ribbons offering less resistance to the movement of the water.
