Graphite. Coloured scanning tunnelling micrograph (STM) of the surface of graphite, a form of the element carbon. The hexagonal pattern is related to an identical arrangement of the carbon atoms. To create this three-dimensional image, a needle was scanned just over the surface of the graphite. The needle followed the surface contours by main- taining the same electron density, a measure of distance from the atoms. Magnification unknown.
