False-colour scanning transmission electron micrograph (STEM) of a uranyl microcrystal from a uranyl acetate solution. The image shows the uranium atoms arranged in a perfect hexagonal shape around a central atom. Each of the atoms is spaced 0. 32 nanometres from its neighbour. The carbon, oxygen & hydrogen atoms, which make up the remainder of the uranyl acetate microcrystal are transparent to the electrons used as the illuminatng radiation & do not show. The image is an averaged" picture obtained from six views of the microcrystal as it is rotated in the electron microscope. Magnification: x22 million at 35mm size. Microcosmos P.126 fig.7.2"
