Gran Sasso Laboratories. Road sign showing the way to the National Laboratories at Gran Sasso. Experiments are carried out here to detect dark matter and neutrinos. Dark matter is as yet undetected but postulated to exist in the universe. It includes Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and maybe neutrinos, elementary particles produced by stars and supernova explosions. The laboratories are located 1400 metres underground in Abruzzo, Italy, and are accessed from a 10 kilometre long road tunnel. The rock overlay shields the laboratories from cosmic rays.
