The Seven Bishops Returning from the Tower. From 'Engelands Godsdienst hersteld', Amsterdam, 1689. Seven Anglican bishops petitioned James II to revise his Declaration of Indulgence of 1688 which undermined the authority of the Anglican church. The were imprisoned in the Tower of London accused of seditious libel. Tried before the Court of King's Bench, they were found not guilty.
