Frederick Gustavus Burnaby (1842-1885) English traveller and soldier born at Bedford. In the winter of 1875-1876 he rode through Russian Asia to the Khanate of Kiva. In 1882 he crossed the English Channel in a hot air balloon. Killed at the Battle of Abu Klea when part of the relief force hoping to save Gordon at Khartoum.
