Julius Benedict (1804-1885) German-born composer and conductor, born at Stuttgart, the son of a Jewish banker. He spent most of his career in England. Benedict in 1882 when his cantata 'Graziella' was performed at the Birmingham Festival. Cartoon by Edward Linley Sambourne in the Punch's Fancy Portraits series from Punch (London, 26 August 1882).
