John Smeaton (1724-1792) English civil engineer born at Austhorpe near Leeds, Yorkshire. In the background of the portrait is the third lighthouse on the Eddystone Rock in the English Channel off Plymouth, Devon, which he constructed between 1757 and 1759. He also carried out researches into the mechanics of windmills and waterwheels, and made improvements to the Newcomen steam engine.
