Omayyade Palace, by Unknown Artist, 724 - 743, 8th Century. Jordan, Amman, Amman, Omayyade Palace. Detail of the Portal. The decoration was carved on three registers. A cornice separates the lower socle from an order of blind niches, each if which is framed by two small indented columns, divided by a denticulated arch. Another cornice divides the lower order from a further order of wider blind niches, also framed by miniature columns and decorated with medallions of palmettes and rosettes. The third order, consisting of smaller blind niches, recalls the lower orders and crowns the wall. Some architectural elements standards patterns are clearly derived from Sassanian buildings, such as the cruciform cross shaped plan with four Ivan and the decorative composition. The original wooden roofing must have had a parabolic section. 2009 photograph.
