Omnivorous Mexican spadefoot toad tadpole nibbles at skeletal remains of a much larger tadpole of the same species. Spea multiplicata. Synonyms include Scaphiopus multiplicatus and Scaphiopus hammondi multiplicata. Tadpoles can be either omnivorous or carnivorous. Omnivorous tadpoles grow and develop relatively slowly compared to the carnivorous morph. Eating fairy shrimp can induce transformation of omnivorous tadpoles to strictly carnivorous ones, and carnivorous tadpoles are commonly cannibalistic. Captured in the Sonoran Desert near Robles Junction, Southeastern Arizona, USA. Photographed under controlled conditions
