Chelsea Bridge, London. Suspension bridge over the Thames, opened in 1858, connecting Chelsea with Battersea on the south bank of the river. It was replaced in the 1930s. Engineer, Thomas Page (1803-1877). Cost of construction ?83,319. When first opened it was a toll bridge, free for foot traffic on Sundays and Bank Holidays. In 1879 tolls were abolished.
