Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), Dutch pioneer microscopist. Title page of Microscopium by Anton van Leeuwenhoek, third edition, (Leyden, 1708). Leeuwenhoek was one of the first to recognise cells in animals and to give the first accurate description of microbes and spermatzoma and blood corpuscles.
