Flight of locks on the Saima Canal, Finland. A ship is descending the flight. On the left is a typical boatman. This canal, completed in 1856, linked Saima Lake to the Gulf of Finland. Chief engineer on the canal was Nils Ericson (1802-1860), brother of the Swedish born American inventor John Ericsson (1803-1889). From Liebig trade card c1900. Chromolithograph.
