Bridgewater Canal, built to carry coals from the Duke of Bridgewater's mines at Worsley into the city of Manchester . Barge crossing the Barton aqueduct over the Irwell. Canal opened 17 July 1761 and was later extended to Liverpool. Engineer: James Brindley. From copperplate by Pollard published in 1794.
